It Happened Again
It happened again.
In a prior post titled “I Can’t Believe He Likes That!”, I spoke about a mom remarking on the fact that her child enjoyed an activity that she never thought he would- going through a dark, fabric tunnel.
Well the other day, I had a similar conversation with a father of a new client.
Coincidentally with another tunnel- although a different type this time, the 6 year old was having a grand old time crawling through the “mega tunnel” I had created by connecting three shorter tunnels together. He was enjoying “hiding” stuffed animals and a ball in the tunnel and then “rescuing” them by going through to retrieve them.
As the child was engaging in the activity, his father mentioned that they have a similar tunnel at home but he’s never shown an interest in it. I explained to the father (similarly to the parent in the other blog post) about how often kids will choose activities in my space that they might not choose otherwise. I think sometimes it may have to do with the way it is presented to them, but it also goes back to the fact that the body knows what it needs! Please- refer back to the post by that name if you want to learn more.
The thing about this child, is that not only did he make a choice he might not otherwise, he was also PLAYING and engaged with me and the activity. Without giving you too much personal information about this client, I want you to understand that that was HUGE!
This child was participating in the activity, engaging in some reciprocal language (back and forth conversation) and even making verbal requests. All of which (up until this point) had not happened in our sessions, nor does it happen in other environments.
This was session number 4. That’s right- session number 4, so one month into weekly sessions and we were seeing these significant shifts!
It happened again- with the choosing of a surprising activity. However, bigger than that, MUCH bigger, is what I see over and over and over with this work…
Positive changes that come from (seemingly) simple movements.
It’s why I do what I do- to witness those changes and know that we are making a difference in that child’s life.
I can’t wait to see what happens as I continue the work with this child. What ever happens, I know that it will be amazing. ⭐️
